Installing Vinyl Siding Over Louisiana Pacific Siding
Q: I have lived in my 2000 sq-ft home since it was built in 1992 in Seattle. Unfortunately, it was built with 4' by 8' panels of Louisiana-Pacific Inner-Seal siding and I just found out about the litigation early this year. I'd like to take care of the problem by installing vinyl siding. I have several bids ranging from $13K to $19K. All suggest to install new vinyl over LP. I am a little concerned with this process because I don't know if it would take care the problem and I don't want to deal with LP in the future. Does the price range seem reasonable for this type of job? Would it take care of the mold in the LP? Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
A: We agree that you could cover the LP with vinyl siding. We would just cover the existing LP with perforated foam foil-backed insulating board to allow moisture to escape before applying the new siding. This should prevent mold problems from developing.
Depending on the quality of product and workmanship, that $13,000 -$19,000 price range does not sound unreasonable. Just make sure you have several detailed written bids explaining the materials to be used, the scope of work and the warranties. If they are comparable, you should be able to make an informed decision.
Also, keep in mind that warranties are only as good as the companies that extend them, so make sure both the manufacturer of the vinyl products you are considering and the contractor you hire to install your siding have good track records.
