Finding a Contractor for an Addition
Q: I am planning to buy a home in Lake Geneva and would like to expand the house. I would like to redesign the house so that we have more space in the kitchen, dining and living rooms.
The house is about 40 to 60 years old. What should I do first to expand?
A: You need a professional to design and construct your
addition/remodeling project. You could start with an architect or building designer to design it, then (with or without help from your designer) hire a general contractor to build it. Usually a complete set of plans and specifications is given to several different contractors to bid.
Or you could start by hiring a design/build general contractor to oversee all stages of the project, from design through construction. Although they'll consult with other specialists as necessary, and collect estimates from subcontractors, they will ultimately be responsible for taking the project through all stages.
As far as doing some of the work yourself, that is something you would have to discuss with the general contractor who builds it. If you decide to start with an architect or building designer, it probably won't be an issue until it comes time to choose a builder.
It would probably be a good idea to interview several different kinds of professionals to determine the best way to go. To find some, visit Home Advisor. Enter service requests for the tasks you need to be matched with the ideal service professional in your area.
