Painting a Stone Pillar
Q: Can you advise a paint for a stone pillar at the entrance to our drive? The previous paint has flaked off.
A: The situation described was probably caused by either of the following:
- An oil based paint was applied, which will deteriorate, becoming flaky and brittle.
- An acrylic based paint was applied to a contaminated (either oily or greasy) surface.
The correct application would be an acrylic based paint applied to a clean rock/mortar surface. To attain a clean surface, I recommend water blasting to remove completely all existing paint, acid etching (using a muratic acid or comparable), then applying the Acrylic based paint.
