Stone Countertops
If you're looking to buy new countertops, the material you choose will depend on your budget and the appearance and serviceable qualities you want.
Countertops are made from materials that are durable and, in most cases, easy to maintain. Most combine a base of plywood or particleboard that spans across the top of a cabinet and the finish surface material.
Types of Stone Countertops
Natural stone, such as granite, is considered to be the height of elegance and will last longer than most kitchens. Stone, however, is very expensive and requires some care. Natural stone looks very attractive, but when installed in solid pieces it is the most expensive option in countertops. Choices such as granite, marble and soapstone can also be installed on counterops in 12" square tiles and grouted. This can give you the beauty of natural stone for less expense than installing a solid piece. Another advantage is that individual tiles can be easily changed if damaged, so when you have your countertop installed be sure to keep a few extra pieces from the original lot in case you need to replace any in the future. The pieces used to make repairs will match the rest of the countertop.
The naturally porous surface of stone needs to be regularly sealed to repel water-and oil-based stains. Soapstone is soft and most prone to chipping. Professionals can often polish small scratches and chips from your countertop. Cleaning and polishing can also restore the shine back to stone which has become dull and hazy. If a solid stone surface cracks, the entire countertop will need to be replaced.
