Installing Quarter Round Trim
Q: I recently had vinyl installed professionally in my kitchen and hallway. Prior to installation I was informed I would need to install quarter round trim under the cabinets. After the installation, I was informed I would need to install quarter round around my entire hallway and kitchen to hide the vinyl cut marks on the outside of the trim. Is this regular practice?
I would have gladly removed the trim prior to installation if I had known it could not be tucked under the trim like carpet.
A: The perimeter edge of vinyl has a natural tendency to curl and therefore must be anchored in some manner whenever possible.
Professional flooring companies usually address this problem in several ways.
- They remove and put back the client's existing trim.
- They install new trim of the client's choice
- They ask the client if they prefer to install quarter round to save the customer the expense of the labor. (In my experience, most do not.)
Although I cannot speak for the flooring company you hired, perhaps they only quoted you the cheapest option in order to provide you with the lowest bid and therefore win the job. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to inform them of your disappointment. If they care about their reputation and word-of-mouth referrals vs. complaints, they may strive to improve your satisfaction. However, if the written contract did not specifically address the trim/quarter round issue, I don't know that you have much legal recourse.
This is another example of why it is so important for consumers to insist upon written estimates with detailed specifications, including the scope of work and the types and amount of materials to be used. If you had received such detailed estimates from several flooring contractors, perhaps you could have more accurately compared services.
