Repairing a Cool Deck
Q: I have what they call cool deck around my pool and it has lifted in certain spots. There is about a ten square foot area that has to be replaced. Can it be replaced or does the whole pool area have to be redone? How much will it cost and who do you recommend to do the job?
A: A cool deck contains asbestos, so legally, it must be removed by a certified asbestos abatement company because the process will undoubtedly release hazardous asbestos fibers into the air. However, it is often possible to encapsulate asbestos materials by covering them with another product. Perhaps you could cover it all, or just pay to have that small area removed, patch it, then cover it all with a new layer of concrete.
I recommend contacting an environmental testing agency for advice and have them test it to determine if it indeed does contain asbestos. Then you could probably hire an asbestos abatement specialist to do as little as necessary to comply with legal requirements, then hire a concrete contractor to finish the job.
