Fire Prevention and Protection
Smoke Detectors, Fire Extinguishers
Smoke is responsible for three out of four fire-related deaths. Working smoke detectors should be installed on every level of your home and inside sleeping areas. Inexpensive smoke detectors are also available for the hearing impaired. Fire extinguishers should be mounted in the kitchen, garage and workshop. Purchase an ABC type extinguisher for putting out all types of fires. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned once a year. Install a chimney spark arrester to help prevent roof fires.

Sprinklers and sprinkler systems
Fire sprinklers are another widely recognized safety measure, especially for commercial buildings. When one fire sprinkler head goes off to fight a fire the entire sprinkler system doesn't activate because sprinklers react to temperatures in individual rooms. The costs for installing fire sprinkler systems in buildings 6 to 8 stories high ranges from under a dollar to about $2.00 per square foot in most new construction and from about $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot for retrofitting sprinklers in existing buildings. Most local fire departments offer free home fire safety advice to help you.
Combining systems
If you're combining an old and new system, please describe the old system (brand names, features etc.) in the Special Requirements section. It will help your service professional in making a more accurate estimate.
