Select Vinyl Siding
Q: What is the difference between D4.5 and D5 vinyl? Also what does Consumer Reports say is the best vinyl to use?
A: I don't know the answer to your question, but I would guess it might have something to do with the thickness of the vinyl. I suggest you research such technical info on the Internet with a couple of different major vinyl siding manufacturers such as ALCOA and VIPCO. Those websites also explain the characteristics, features and warranties of all their different products for you to compare.
As far as the "best" vinyl, you might go to a library to see if Consumer Reports has rated it. However, as with most products, you have to consider many different factors to determine which product would be best for you. To evaluate siding, you will need to consider the conditions of the house, the climate, how long you intend to stay in that home, the extent of the warranty, the price, etc.
I recommend talking to several siding specialists who offer several types and grades of siding to decide which would make the most sense for you. Getting several opinions and then comparing bids on comparable qualities of siding will be the best way to choose the most appropriate product and service professional to install it for you. (They also may be able to tell you the difference between D4.5 and D5 vinyl.)
