Install or Replace Wood Shake Roofing
Modern roofing options are the result of eons of invention and experimentation. Some, such as slate and wood shakes, have remained virtually unchanged for centuries. Others, such as asphalt/fiberglass composites, lightweight concrete, and coated-metal tile, are products of the technological revolution. Each has slightly different durability, appearance, cost, and ease of application.
In addition to their beauty, wood shakes and shingles are easy to install and durable (especially when treated with a perservative every 3-5 years). Shakes are more expensive than shingles because they're thicker and handmade and can last longer. However, the scarcity of old growth lumber previously used to make wood shakes and shingles means they simply will not be in supply as long as they were in past decades.
Some wood shake and wood shingle roofs require open sheathing, one-by-six boards that are spaced apart. The spaces allow air to circulate around shingles to prevent moisture buildup underneath the wood. Moisture problems should be immediately addresssed by a professional roofer to prevent further damage to your roof and home.
In addition to their beauty, wood shake shingles are durable (especially when treated with a preservative every 3-5 years) and easy to install. Shakes are more expensive because they're thicker, handmade and can last up to 50 years rather than the 25 years more typical of shingles.
