Installing Concrete Flatwork & Steps
Concrete slabs, sidewalks and steps are fairly convenient and inexpensive additions to any home exterior and provide useful surface areas for a range of traffic. Once you have an idea of the areas where you'd like concrete to be poured, contact service professionals to get quotes.
You can also do the preparation work yourself, have the concrete delivered and finish it yourself. If you choose to do this, have your site completely ready before the concrete is delivered. This means having all forms built so the mix can be poured into them. Concrete professionals can help or advise you on the proper way to build forms.
If you are installing stairs, you can purchase pre-cast stairs for easy installation, but creating forms for steps isn't terribly complicated. You need to determine the rise (vertical height) and the run (horizontal length) of each step, then construct forms accordingly. Check local codes to make sure the dimensions of your steps are appropriate.
For steps and sidewalks which will likely endure a great deal of foot traffic, be sure the final concrete surface is not super smooth otherwise the concrete will become slippery and hazardous when wet.
Be sure the surface is rough and skid resistant. This can be achieved with a broom finish (sweeping over the concrete before it fully dries with a rough texture like a broom) or by leaving exposed aggregate on the surface.
Once the concrete work is done, be sure to follow proper maintenance to prevent deterioration. Concrete sealer can be applied to prevent staining.
